THE SELECTION ACCUMULATOR (LUCID FRENZY PLAYLIST)

The next Lucid Frenzy playlist starts off with the one song-based team-up of John Cale and Terry Riley. The platters that matter then include Current 93 lamenting the passing of the dead (as is their wont), Nina Nastasia telling us how it is, …and The Native Hipsters making musical Dada while the Delgados use a semi-colon in their track title; surely the most Delgadoish moment of all. And New Order still sound like the future, if unfortunately not the one we got.

Muddy Waters either needs no introduction or whoever you’re introducing him to is unworthy of the honour. Hawkwind go all JG Ballad and dystopian, but get to admire the view. King Crimson see red (and in the process inventing alt.metal years early). Brainticket combine psychedelic soul with Krautrock into one heady brew.

And then there’s Lankum. Because you can never have enough existential Irish folk, am I right?

Our next Spotify playlist takes the form of a winter ritual. The opening 23 Skidoo track is from the album ’The Culling is Coming’, which came with bespoke ceremonies for Winter, Summer and Autumn. Presumably because you can get through Spring by yourself. Things then carry on in similar vein…

Mostly, this is tracks to trance you out rather than have you listen to them. Never a bad thing in my book. And of course the primary purpose of a Winter playlist is to take you out of the fact that its currently Winter. If it doesn’t work for you, then your entry fee will be refunded in full.

The title may well come from ’Invention For Destruction’, a Czech animated version of ’20,000 Leagues Under the Sea’. Or somewhere else. Who can say?

THIS IS AMERICA (A PLAYLIST OF 80s/90s AMERICAN PUNK, HARDCORE + ALTERNATIVE)

My latest, and last, themed Spotify playlist… Captain Beefheart once quipped “I play music, too many work it”. Whereas these guys worked it, just in a way which made it work. First, they worked a stage. Music had to be new and original but still built from blood and sinew. And they took a blue-collar build-it mentality to gig circuits and distro channels, creating facts on the ground which the rock stars airily flew over. Even lysergic-spewing reprobates the Butthole Surfers (handily pictured) were harder-working than anyone in showbiz. They did it their way.

My latest themed Spotify playlist, upping the ante on classic punk! British Post-Punk, a heady stew of off-kilter funk, dub and Dada, was probably the popular music movement most ruthlessly devoted to ripping itself to bits and rebuilding in a different order. Punk traded in instinctive outrage and slogan-sized certainties, Post-Punk sought to confound and intensify the contradictions. “I don’t know either” sang This Heat, “what is the answer?” (The apt title phrase is from Simon Reynolds’ ‘Rip It Up And Start Again.’)

Down these dark streets a band must go… Punk was born in the big, bad cities of America’s east cost. The more those urban centres fell apart, the more weeds flowered in the cracks.

This was when Punk was still underground, not yet packaged or commodified. So it wasn’t a style you kept to, but a totemic term for all the freaks, losers and outsiders to gather under. As Patti Smith said: “To me, punk rock is freedom”.

FOLK’S NOT DEAD (A SPOTIFY PLAYLIST)

Now, this playlist may take a somewhat catholic definition of Folk. To the degree that some will say there’s just two real folk songs in it, and others only one. Yet we’re not talking about a museum exhibit, but music which continues to live, breathe and evolve. You can't span the breadth of it in seventy minutes, but hopefully you can catch some of the variety. And remember - fate is only foolin' with us friend.
