Th...I know what you mean about showing the monster. They probably did get themselves into a damned-if-they-do-damned-if-they-don't spot over it. Most horror films suffer from that to some degree, but this one has it in particular. For my pennyworth they should have gone for some indeterminate-shaped Lovecraftian thing, something you're not sure what you're seeing even as you're seeing it. (Something else easier to pull off in our CGI world.)

And, as mentioned in the review, I also think it was a mistake to reveal it as a dumb brute. It should have been kept ambiguous what it was, or what it's motivations were.

I reckon we'll have to agree to disagree over the military. To my mind a military that's spooked and badly losing it is more likely to shoot anybody who doesn't do exactly what they're told. I mean, at least that's something they know how to do! And the 'nice military' thing doesn't fit with them rendering the tape as classified in the ending.Gavin Burrowshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16347163260510316959noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4202625234167413814.post-39525145986791174192008-02-18T13:28:00.000+00:002008-02-18T13:28:00.000+00:00I think we had to see the monster. For me, that's ...I think we had to see the monster. For me, that's what differentiated this from Blair Witch, where everything had to be left to the viewer's imagination to make it scarier. We needed that money shot here, otherwise we would have felt cheated.

As for the bit where the army just let them go - the way I interpreted that was that the soldiers in question were so far out of their comfort zone, that their training broke down. They're trained to deal with human threats, whether it be terrorists or an enemy army. They have no training in how to react in a situation like this, and as a result they were floundering, their discipline and authority was breaking down in the face of an unimaginable enemy.

That was how I justified it anyway!Rolhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02103804480646939038noreply@blogger.com
